Bill Gates’ Plan to Give Away 99% of His Wealth in the Next 20 Years
Microsoft founder Bill Gates has announced his intention to "not die rich" and revealed his plan to give away the majority of his fortune over the next 20 years. Through the Gates Foundation, Gates, a well-known philanthropist, is committed to improving lives globally. The Gates Foundation, established in 2000, focuses primarily on health programs and has pledged to invest $200 billion in its mission over the next two decades to help people live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
In his recent blog post, Gates disclosed that his plan is to donate 99% of his $108 billion net worth by 2045. This is a shift from his previous approach. He explained, "When Melinda (his ex-wife) and I started the Gates Foundation in 2000, we included a clause that the organization would sunset several decades after our deaths. However, after rethinking it with input from our board, I now believe we can achieve our goals on a shorter timeline."
For the first 25 years, the Gates Foundation has donated over $100 billion. This year, in addition to celebrating the foundation's 25th anniversary, several milestones are being marked: the 100th birthday of Gates’ father, who helped start the foundation, Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, and Gates turning 70.
Gates revealed that by December 31, 2045, the foundation will close permanently. In the meantime, he and his team plan to make the most significant progress possible in achieving a more equitable world.
The Gates Foundation’s Focus for the Next 20 Years
Gates’ plan to give away most of his wealth will target three key areas over the next two decades:
-
Maternal and Infant Mortality: Since 1990, the number of children under five who die each year has fallen from 12 million to 5 million. The foundation will focus on improving nutrition for mothers and children, as well as increasing access to life-saving vaccines and medicines.
-
Eliminating Infectious Diseases: Gates aims to eliminate infectious diseases like measles and malaria, following the example of smallpox. Tuberculosis is also a target. The foundation’s efforts will focus on reducing the costs of medical innovations to make them affordable worldwide, ensuring greater impact.
-
Fighting Poverty: Gates expressed concern over cuts in foreign aid by countries like the US, UK, and France, which provide assistance to the world's poorest people. Despite these setbacks, the Gates Foundation will continue supporting initiatives aimed at helping people and countries lift themselves out of poverty.
Gates ended his blog post by reiterating that he will not be remembered as a man who died rich. Through the Gates Foundation, he is determined to leave a legacy of giving, ensuring that his wealth is used to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges.
