What are d-d and f-f transitions ? How to they differ?

Transition within the d-orbitals of an elements are called d-d transition, while transition within f-blocks elements are called f-f transition. 
These transition can be brought about by the absorption of radiation from the visible light and transmission of the complementary colour.  The compound thus looks coloured.
